Neurostatus
e-Scoring

Electronic data capture and management system for a standardised, quantified neurological examination and assessment of Kurtzke’s Functional Systems and the Expanded Disability Status Scale in Multiple Sclerosis

PLEASE NOTE: In early 2017 a new webbased data capture and management system will be launched by a new provider. For more information please contact the UHBS Team.

Neurostatus e-Scoring (NESC) introduces advanced electronic data capture technology on the NESC iPad. The system offers real time feedback to the EDSS Rater based on a sophisticated algorithm developed in collaboration with the MS Team of the University Hospital Basel, Switzerland under the guidance of Prof. Ludwig Kappos. All data can be monitored real-time on NESC Admin, the web-based data management application.

Neurostatus e-Scoring aims at improving data quality and consistency of Neurostatus/EDSS assessments in clinical trials.

ELECTRONIC DATA CAPTURE

PLEASE NOTE: In early 2017 a new webbased data capture and management system will be launched by another provider. For more information please contact the UHBS Team.

Neurostatus e-Scoring (NESC) offers electronic data capture on the NESC iPad with a sophisticated feedback system. The NESC iPad includes the following features:

  • Advanced and user friendly interface for speedy data capturing
  • Real-time feedback for EDSS Raters to minimize the number of queries
  • Continuous education for EDSS Raters through real-time feedback
  • Neurostatus Definitions accessible directly on iPad
  • Check box to indicate "potential relapse"

DATA CLARIFICATION

PLEASE NOTE: In early 2017 a new webbased data capture and management system will be launched by another provider. For more information please contact the UHBS Team.

The first step of the Data Clarification Process (DCF) is performed on the NESC iPad. After completing the Neurostatus/EDSS assessment the EDSS Rater is asked to request at least one round of feedback. The NESC algorithm checks the Functional System (FS) Scores against the Neurostatus Subscores as well as the FS Scores and the Ambulation Score against the EDSS Step. The EDSS Rater receives immediate feedback and is able to resolve inconsistencies directly on the NESC iPad. The final decision regarding the scores submitted remains with the EDSS Rater. The algorithm can be overruled by giving a comment justifying the inconsistency.

The second step of the Data Clarification Process (DCF) is the EDSS Expert review performed on NESC Admin, the web-based data management system. In a dialog with the EDSS Expert the EDSS Rater reviews and corrects inconsistent scores. If a query is raised by the EDSS Expert the EDSS Rater is automatically notified by e-mail.

DATA MANAGEMENT

PLEASE NOTE: In early 2017 a new webbased data capture and management system will be launched by another provider. For more information please contact the UHBS Team.

The online platform NESC Admin offers web-based data management, available for Study Personnel and Sponsor Staff. Information displayed on the overview page corresponds to individual user profiles which are configurable per sponsor's request. Sophisticated access control determines read/write-permissions and limitations (e.g. blinded raters) for each user profile.

NESC Admin also offers various features for monitoring and reporting purposes:

  • A real-time list and detailed view of all examinations accessible at any time
  • Download of PDF printouts for each assessment is available
  • Reminders of system events (e.g. pending queries) are accessible
  • An extensive logbook displays user activity
  • Customized reports (e.g. disability progression) are available for download
